I wanted a workout tracker to kept our data side-by-side on a leaderboard, and let us swap training plans without texting screenshots back and forth. 
Nothing I tried did all three without a subscription wall, so I wrote my own.Most of the app is free, it covers the full workout experience and progress tracking with 80+ exercises.
The one-time purchase unlocks multiple plans, custom movements, and the social&#x2F;sharing features, mainly to pay for the infra.The mobile app is React Native via Expo with Expo Router, NativeWind for styling, Zustand for state (every store is user-scoped via an AsyncStorage key prefix so account switches do a clean rehydrate, good way to have several using using the same app), Reanimated for animations, and react-i18next across six locales. 
The core workout loop is fully offline, and a Firebase layer sits on top for optional cross-device sync and the social features.

Back in 2019, I was a CS student in Iraq. I taught myself Node.js, React, and TypeScript. Then in 2020, the pandemic started, and honestly, it was perfect timing for me because suddenly a lot of local businesses needed delivery web apps.I was lucky enough to know some of those business owners, and I ended up building 4 delivery apps by myself. I was coding solo, finishing the apps, setting up Docker, deploying everything, and actually getting paid for it while I was still in my second year of college. It felt unreal. I remember telling my parents, “I have my own money now, you don’t need to give me.” It was one of the best feelings in my life.Later, I got an internship at a company, and I was so happy about it. I honestly couldn’t believe I was already working as a developer while still studying.After the internship, I had an idea for a mobile app. I learned React Native in one week and felt really comfortable with it. I started building the app, but eventually it failed and during that time, I managed to get freelance contracts.Then AI came, and suddenly the bar became much higher.I thought maybe I should build a SaaS product, so I tried that too… and failed again. Somehow, after that, I got another remote contract with a different company. Then I landed the biggest contract of my life — my dream job — with a well-known open-source company.The CTO and the team were incredibly kind. At that point, I knew Go pretty well, but mostly for backend REST APIs and CLI tools. Then the CTO gave me a huge task: build a bidirectional gRPC streaming system that could send debugging files from clients on different devices to the server and then stream them into an admin dashboard.It was a massive task.I told him, “Sure, I can do it,” but honestly, I had never worked with a codebase that big before, and I had zero experience with microservices.So during the first week, I bought Udemy courses on microservices and gRPC. I stayed awake all night learning about streaming and diving deeper into Go. I remember one time I literally didn’t sleep for an entire day because I was so focused and excited.That period was probably the happiest moment of my career.I learned so much, got feedback from senior engineers, finished the feature, integrated it with the Next.js dashboard, shipped it, and finally got it merged.And then… that was it.No more tasks.I felt empty after that.Now with AI raising expectations so much, and with me living in Iraq where remote work is basically the only way to work on meaningful projects, the market feels brutally competitive. On top of that, there are fake jobs, agencies wasting your time, and fake opportunities just to make you fill out useless forms.Now I’m sitting here struggling to even get an unpaid role.I contacted people.

The existing react-native-callkeep is harder to use, isn&#x27;t easy to set up VoIP notifications with and hasn&#x27;t been updated in two years. This new module is tested with the latest versions of iOS&#x2F;Android, Expo and LiveKit. It has a simple and unified API across iOS&#x2F;Android.

Hi HN,My name is Matt and I&#x27;ve been working on a project called Manger, a mobile app used for livestock management. As a child, I grew up in a rural area with chickens, cows and other livestock around me. At the same time, I&#x27;ve always been passionate about technology. About a year ago, I launched Manger on iOS, and, more recently on Android. Just this past week, I launched RFID tags for poultry, called &quot;eFlock Smart Poultry Tags&quot; along with a companion scanner. The &quot;killer feature&quot; of the app is long-range scanning support (up to 15 feet), which can be used to count and identify animals. I imagine it has some other &quot;current&quot; uses, for example, finding young chickens that have been spooked and hiding in grass.The app is written with React Native and uses PouchDB, backed by SQLite. What makes this really neat is that you can sync your data across devices via a (local!) CouchDB server. At my homestead, my wife typically takes care of chickens and records how many eggs we&#x27;ve collected each day. On the other hand, I take care of rabbits and record their weight, as we keep them for meat. All of the data syncs between our iPhones. I currently have a Raspberry Pi setup running CouchDB and it has been working well. The goal for the app is to always be offline-first, with sync and backup functionality backed by on-premises hardware. This is a &quot;beta&quot; feature, as it&#x27;s currently undocumented and I don&#x27;t sell the hardware for that (yet).The eFlock Smart Poultry Tags are passive UHF. It took me quite a bit of time to find a chip &#x2F; antenna combination that has &quot;long rage&quot;, while being &quot;small&quot;. It&#x27;s a trade off. The tags are 45.5mm x 19.5mm x 1mm and are perfectly fine for adult chickens. I think they are fine on young chickens as well - about 8 weeks when they become fully feathered. Tags are 3D-printed with TPU, which makes them flexible and durable. At the time of this writing, nine months into my test on 32 chickens, only one so far has been damaged.The scanner, eScan H103 SE, is sourced from a manufacturer in China. Similar situation as with the tags, it took me quite a while to find something that is &quot;long range&quot; while staying relatively affordable. Depending on make &#x2F; model, livestock scanners (LF&#x2F;HF) range from a few hundred to upwards of a thousand dollars, so the scanner is definitely on the cheaper end of this spectrum.My next upcoming feature are functions for number-type properties. For example, get the totals, average, maximum or minimum number of eggs collected within some specific time frame. Along those same lines, (local!) AI integration where you can simply ask &quot;how many eggs did I collect last week?&quot;.I have quite a few exciting long-term plans as well.Here&#x27;s a video of the scanning feature:

onboarding that builds a persona, get compared automatically
against other users, and connect through conversation before
ever seeing a photo. Photos unlock after you&#x27;ve actually matched.A few things I tried to solve that bother me about existing apps:- Ghosting: a common issue where people just stop replying.
 I&#x27;ve implemented a system that discourages this — repeated
 ghosting eventually results in being removed from the app.- Safety at its core: photo scanning, real-time moderation for
 harassment and grooming patterns, behavioural flagging.- No swiping feed: you spend your time actually talking to
 matches, not browsing profiles.Stack: Supabase, Railway, React Native, and Claude Code did a

I did a hackathon many years ago (before LLMs) where I spent a serious amount of effort training a conventional machine learning algorithm and integrating it into a react native app. I had a genuinely impressive team to make this possible given it was 2016.The winning team bought a bootstrap theme for $35 and made a landing page for a nonexistent app.

How would getting rid of postinstall break patch-package? If people use a package, and that package needs some kind of step to get working, user of that package should decide when that step happens. He can very well just call patch before building on his own. There&#x27;s zero issues with that approach and the upside is he actually has control.I work in a monorepo where running install calls dozens of deeply nested postinstalls of some elaborate NextJs or React Native dependencies other projects use. It&#x27;s borderline insane. Unless you regularly screen everything, it&#x27;s impossible to know whether one of those is compromised, especially in the world of Node where is-even is being used and the sheer amount of crypto scams around.

my pet conspiracy theory is this is the Opus 4.5 from a few months ago which was extremely good but dumbed down after a week because it was just too good, they didn&#x27;t want to release it to public. They pulled it down and deployed another &quot;Opus&quot;, after that it was just a downhill. Opus 4.8 is unusable for me in React Native, TS, Rails development work.Opus 4.8 gets stuck in weird loops where Codex one shots the bugs.
