Hey everyone! I just built a mobile app using Expo (React Native) for a platform that moves $6M&#x2F;month. It’s a neobank used by 6,500+ nonprofit organizations across the world.One of my biggest challenges, while juggling being a full-time student, was getting permission from Apple&#x2F;Google to use advanced native features such as Tap to Pay (for in-person donations) and Push Provisioning (for adding your card to your digital wallet). It was months of back-and-forth emails, test case recordings, and also compliance checks.Even after securing Apple&#x2F;Google’s permission, any minor fix required publishing a new build, which was time-consuming. After dealing with this for a while, I adopted the idea of “over the air updates” using Expo’s EAS update service. This allowed me to remotely trigger updates without needing a new app build.The 250 hours I spent building this app were an INSANE learning experience, but it was also a whole lot of fun. Show HN: Hacker Reader – A clean, open-source Hacker News client for iOS

Mental arithmetic has been a hobby of mine for a while. It&#x27;s fun and good exercise for your brain.When I switched to iOS, I couldn’t find a decent app. Most had ads, sign-ups, excessive gamification, or mandatory subscriptions, and none were customizable enough. So I built my own.Athena Math lets you- Practice operations not normally found in mental math apps: modulo, square roots, percents, GCD and LCM
- Tailor each session: set your time or problem limits, choose digit ranges (1–5), mix digit lengths (e.g. 55 + 436), and select any combination of operations you like.
- A detailed stats screen that shows the time you spent on problems, problems per day, percent correct, etc. All graphs are filterable.
- A history screen that shows all your sessions.
- You can import and export your history for offline analysis or to transfer
- Offline tutorials are included for all operations
- Lastly, you can use it immediately. There are no accounts.So far, it&#x27;s received a positive response from the mental math community. It&#x27;s an incredible feeling to have people actually value my work enough to pay for it. (This was my first app).I&#x27;ve had a lot of fun building Athena math and using it myself. Practicing obscure operations like GCD, LCM and square roots has taught me to see patterns in numbers that I didn&#x27;t see before. Overall, it&#x27;s improved my number sense.It&#x27;s built in React Native + Expo&#x2F;EAS. I use Fastlane to manage app store metadata (and store in version control), and it&#x27;s using a serverless AWS backend for payment verification. History is stored locally in an SQLite database.It&#x27;s free to use! You&#x27;re limited to 12 sessions daily, but if you wanna keep using for free, you can simply delete your daily sessions. You loose history and stats, but it&#x27;s an option. You can also just set the time limit to infinity.I know mental math is not the sexiest market, but I&#x27;d love feedback from the HN community -- on the app, the UX, or the technical setup. Show HN: The $1B problem with business cards nobody's solving properly

I really like wine, but my knowledge is not that extensive and in particular drops off pretty rapidly outside of California wines. Even within varietals and regions I’m familiar with, I don’t always know what characteristics to expect from a specific bottle - will this zin be peppery? Juicy? Etc.I built an app to streamline this. You set what kind of wine you’re looking for and your price point, take a picture of the wine list, and it does the rest. It returns the menu ranked by:
- Alignment: How well it matches your flavor preferences.
- Value: The markup compared to retail price.
- Quality: Critics’ scores and online ratings.It also provides a full description&#x2F;tasting notes for each wine, which many wine lists leave out.The Tech Stack- Client: React Native- Backend: FastAPI, deployed on Google Cloud Run- DB: Firestore &amp; AlgoliaHere are the major pieces of the pipeline:Image to Wine List: This is a combination of standard OCR and agentic image recognition. OCR alone couldn’t correctly parse layout (grouping prices with the right items), but &quot;agentic alone&quot; often hallucinated characters. I used Google Vision for the raw text and Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite to structure it.Matching (List → Database): Actually the hardest part. Wine lists take a lot of liberty with naming, and it’s tricky to know if a fuzzy match is close enough. I used Algolia here with custom ranking rules.Agentic Augmentation: I have a pre-built database, but to fill in missing entries in real-time, I need live search. I tried Tavily, Perplexity, and Google Search Grounding. Perplexity (Sonar Pro) ended up being the best balance of accuracy and performance.Recommendation: Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite for flavor profile matching, and regular old math for calculating scores based on value and ratings.Takeaways:AI needs guardrails: It works really well if you use it in small doses with real input data. You can’t (yet) go straight from a photo to a recommendation list in a single prompt without hallucinations.The Latency Trade-off: It’s hard to get both speed and quality. Since this is for a restaurant setting, I had to work hard to minimize LLM calls to keep it from feeling sluggish.

I have 8 years of development experience with PHP, React, React Native, and honestly it&#x27;s time to respecialize. AI Agents made the market more competitive, i struggle to find a good salary, and anyways I&#x27;d like to accumulate enough for a strong CV to be hired by a US company and migrate there with a work visa. I started the most basic of his courses which have linear regression models, gradient descent, and needs knowledge on algebra and calculus for limits and derivatives. This is quite a steep learning curve for me as i needed really to get up to date with maths. I never went to college, always learned everything online. Is this the best way to enter? The most robust one, for those of us who have ambitions to become very serious and involved engineers that want to create big things? (Not somebody that just wants to land a comfy job, working cozily without too much effort)
