I&#x27;ve been running Simpluna, a period-tracking app, for six years. It&#x27;s a company based in Tokyo, Japan, but development and operations are basically a one-person effort. The app is built with React Native (Expo).The defining trait of the app is that it&#x27;s simple, with no unnecessary features. Recording periods, calculating predictions, and sending notifications — that&#x27;s the core of it. This space is dominated by big players (Flo, Clue, and in Japan, Luna Luna). Building something similar would have been hopeless, so I made the things those apps don&#x27;t have my selling point.Optional features beyond the basics are offered as one-time purchases. Most apps in this space use subscriptions, but I didn&#x27;t want to. Subscriptions make revenue easier, but they&#x27;re a mechanism that keeps manufacturing reasons not to cancel, and features keep piling up as a result. By staying away from subscriptions, I could keep the app simple — a tool that doesn&#x27;t intrude on the user&#x27;s life.With privacy in mind, data is stored locally on the device by default rather than in the cloud.So far, the app has found a solid footing in East Asia — Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China. It has almost no name recognition in the West or elsewhere, but there is a small number of users in those regions who like it and keep using it.The reality, though: the app is profitable and covers its running costs, but it&#x27;s not yet at a level that supports a living, so I have no choice but to keep it going alongside other work. I see this as one of the costs of not taking the subscription route.I have two questions. How do you see the difficulty of sustaining an app on one-time purchases alone? So I started this project because my wife wanted a way to check if her word dice game rolls were solvable to avoid wasting time on a roll. I started a building a tool that accepts a picture of the dice and quickly answers if the roll can be solved. Well, that quickly devolved into building a highly-optimized solver efficient enough to run in the browser on WebGPU. Once the solver worked, it turned into an excuse to finally explore multiplayer game dev, which I did with PartyKit and some Cloudflare primitives (durable objects, D1, workers). During this process it all became an actual game I shipped.Where the games features ended up:- A &quot;daily&quot; mode where everyone gets the same 12 tiles each day, and the scoring goal randomly changes (most words, longest word, most crossings, rarest words) tracking streaks and leaderboards.- Real-time multiplayer- 1v1, or drop an invite link into a group chat and up to 10 people race the same roll live, one Durable Object per match room. If no other human&#x27;s are queueing to play, you can play bots instead of waiting. There&#x27;s also Arena, where up to 10 players take a shared roll for a spot on a 24h heat leaderboard.- No ads, no IAP, no sign-up. Guest play is anonymous auth that upgrades in place if you choose to sign in.Things I learned:- Powered by one shared ts core (engine, scoring, word table, match protocol) with a react PWA and react-native for ios&#x2F;android. The core makes it so the rules can&#x27;t drift between web and native and so prelim scoring and offline play can be client-side while all ranked and multiplayer scoring is server-side- Each match room is one Durable Object and since a DO is single-threaded and globally a single-nstance, it&#x27;s the authoritative in-memory source of truth for the match. that way no external lock or DB round-trip need on the hot path. everyone in the room (up to 10 players) has a websocket to that one object. when players make moves, the DO broadcasts progress delta (tiles used, word count, %) to the other players and streams the board itself for a &quot;watch everyone&quot; view. there are also emojireactions on the same channel- For timed modes there&#x27;s a server side match clock. so the DO stamps a start time plus duration when the match goes live, and clients render the countdown from that deadline instead of using a local timer (tried that at first and there was drift). end of match board lock-in fires from a DO timer alarm at 0:00 instead of a client message. I learned the hard way not to let match finalization depend on a client being online or on time so now there&#x27;s a flush window for in-flight board submissions.- One real gotcha was the DO lifecycle. learned that Durable Objects can be evicted seemingly randomly and recycled mid-match, so the room has to rehydrate its state instead of assuming it stayed resident, and the streamed game boards needed to survive that. I’ve stayed true to CSS for the most part, sprinkling on a little custom syntax for things like interactivity.Staying close to CSS gives it good DX, and it turns out to make it very LLM-friendly too. Nearly my entire examples gallery is AI generated. Even cheap models like GLM or DSv4 Flash can one shot whole animations from scratch, no fine-tuning required. There’s a Copilot feature the Playground that will let you bring your own key, or use the MCP to test drive AI features. Do share what you make please!There’s a web player that renders on Canvas or SVG, and a React Native player using Skia. It supports nested transforms and parenting, reusable symbols, masks and track mattes, gradients, trim paths, path morphing, motion paths, and per-subtree time scaling, enough for proper production-grade animation. Converters for Lottie and SVG let you import your existing assets and then prompt changes to it through the built-in Copilot. Something I did not expect was that converted Lottie scenes usually come out smaller than the JSON they came from, despite CSS being the more verbose syntax.My vision is an editable, accessible format for both humans and LLMs that integrates well with version control, truly open source and free in every sense, as opposed to opaque binary or JSON blobs that are difficult to diff, edit and prompt changes to. The existing formats are backed by companies, which is fine and they’ve done great work, but a company’s roadmap follows what makes commercial sense for it. I’d rather the future of motion design be community-driven and aligned with standards that already exist.

There&#x27;s a point in every developer&#x27;s life when they build their own finance app. It&#x27;s a rite of passage. Mine has arrived. I built Cashzilla for three reasons: I wanted it to be genuinely free — not free-until-the-useful-parts. It&#x27;s local-only: no accounts, no server, no cloud, no bank sync. Your data lives on your device and never touches mine. That&#x27;s also why it&#x27;s free — there&#x27;s nothing running that costs me money, so there&#x27;s nothing to monetize by locking features away. If that ever changes, I&#x27;ll be upfront about it. I don&#x27;t want a budget. I&#x27;ve never stuck to one and I don&#x27;t want an app that makes me feel bad about that. My vision was to build a coach: something that tells me what my money is actually doing and whether it&#x27;s working for me. Opening a finance app should feel give you some pleasure; if it feels like a chore, I just won&#x27;t open it.
It&#x27;s early, but usable: manual entry (or CSV import), accounts, scheduled&#x2F;upcoming transactions, and a set of charts. I&#x27;m dogfooding it daily and releasing features every week. Right now I&#x27;m building stock&#x2F;position tracking so net worth reflects everything, not just cash.For the React Native folks: understanding expo-router and dealing with the charts pwas disproportionately painful I burned more time than I&#x27;d like to admit bouncing between libraries before landing on a Skia setup (react-native-skia + Victory Native).I&#x27;d love feedback.
