The X4 is a focused e-ink device, but getting long-form content onto it from a phone almost always involves a cloud step somewhere. I wanted a pipeline where the phone handles extraction and packaging entirely, and the device only ever receives finished files over LAN. Turns out doing this well on-device is more interesting than I expected.INTERESTING TECHNICAL BIT
- Reader mode extraction: Mozilla Readability + linkedom (a fast DOM implementation) to keep extraction lightweight inside RN.
- Client-side rendered pages: for sites where &quot;fetch HTML and parse&quot; fails, I use a headless WebView render → DOM capture → extract pipeline. This is the most fragile part of the stack and where I&#x27;d most value outside eyes.
- EPUB generation: downloads inline images locally, normalizes formats (transcoding problem types to JPEG for e-ink compatibility), then builds a compliant EPUB.
- Local transfer: pushes the resulting EPUB &#x2F; .xtc &#x2F; .bmp to the device via its local API (stock + CrossPoint firmware supported).STACK

Hi folks, today we&#x27;re launching QVAC SDK [0], a universal JavaScript&#x2F;TypeScript SDK for building local AI applications across desktop and mobile.The project is fully open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Our goal is to make it easier for developers to build useful local-first AI apps without having to stitch together a lot of different engines, runtimes, and platform-specific integrations. Under the hood, the SDK is built on top of QVAC Fabric [1], our cross-platform inference and fine-tuning engine.QVAC SDK uses Bare [2], a lightweight cross-platform JavaScript runtime that is part of the Pear ecosystem [3]. I&#x27;m Isaac, and I&#x27;m building Marco (<a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;marcoapp.io" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;marcoapp.io</a>), a cross-platform email client that works with any IMAP provider. macOS, iOS, and web today.I started Marco because I finally lost patience with Apple Mail, and the email client market has a weird gap. Legacy clients look terrible and&#x2F;or are not cross-platform. The good ones scan your data or cost $300+&#x2F;year. And there&#x27;s a graveyard of startups (Tempo, Big Mail, Caley) who built beautiful products and shut down after a year or two.I made a few opinionated bets early on:1. IMAP-first, not Gmail API-first. Nearly every email startup builds on the Gmail API. It&#x27;s convenient, but it locks you into one provider. Marco is IMAP-native, which means it works with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Fastmail, custom domains, and any provider that supports IMAP.2. Offline-first. You should be able to read, reply, delete, and organise email on a plane with no wifi. When you reconnect, everything syncs. This requirement nearly killed me. I went through WatermelonDB, Triplit, InstantDB, PowerSync, and Replicache before landing on my current approach: regular HTTP endpoints with TanStack DB and TanStack Query, using IndexedDB on web and SQLite on mobile as storage layers. I ditched &quot;fully fledged&quot; sync engines entirely. Turns out, for my data volumes (hundreds of thousands of entities per user), every sync engine I tried either choked on performance or added complexity I didn&#x27;t need.
