Steven is a teacher and he got sick of having to deal with outdated, overly expensive and inadequate tooling to create, conduct and grade exams. Most of them don&#x27;t respect privacy either or are US based which generally disqualifies them from usage in many parts of the EU.So we set out with a mission: Create a tool for teachers and schools that covers exams E2E. The reality is that teachers usually care about some things that we simply could not find combined in a product: They want flexible ways to create exams with different task types, they want auto-grading where possible, they want to collect parent signatures, they want to be privacy conscious and they care that their students don&#x27;t cheat.We got to work and this is our result. We tried to address all of these points and more and after two years of development and a multi month beta in stealth mode with a bunch of teachers from Stevens school we are confident enough to officially launch.For those who are more interested in the technical aspects I thought I would share some of them:
We use Nextjs as our meta framework, Sqlite for data persistence, Drizzle as our ORM and Litestream for backups. On the frontend we make extensive use of the different Tanstack libraries, Tiptap for various rich text modules and a heavily modded shadcn component library for large parts of the UI.I will mention that the Spanish translations we use are AI generated and we are fleshing it out more as we get feedback from some of our testers. So are the cover images for our blog posts. We hope to replace them once we have some more time to flesh out our CI.We are a small start up: Just 2 people and fully self-funded. This is a passion project of ours which we hope will help teachers in their workflows and we hope to turn this into our full time jobs if we can make this thing grow. On top of that I&#x27;ve been on a journey to get out of the google-ized life (i.e. google ecosystem), I&#x27;m obsessed with organizing everything, and I&#x27;m kinda growing tired of switching apps for notes, tasks, files, calendars, search, etc... even more so since those apps either have bad AI integrations (gemini...) or no AI integrations at all...So I&#x27;ve been working on https:&#x2F;&#x2F;app.sunwaee.com for the last few months now, which is basically a all-in-one AI OS in your browser where you not only have access to most LLMs as agents, but also to native notes, tasks, files and calendars directly in the app - everything workspace-based. Happened to me last year. My wife always taunted me because I have been anti-Apple since they hermetically sealed their iMacs so you couldn&#x27;t stick in RAM with talking to a &quot;genius&quot;. &quot;It just works!&quot; she says. I dunno, I guess I didn&#x27;t think an &quot;Install&quot; button needed reworking but here we are, not an ugly instruction or tooltip in sight.Also Apple: I bought my son an old refurbished iPad for watching Netflix on long drives. But you can&#x27;t install Netflix! The OS is too old. What&#x27;s the workaround? Simple, if you&#x27;ve previously installed a Netflix on another device you can &quot;restore&quot; it, and then Apple will let you install the old version. On the old OS.Of course I didn&#x27;t have an old Netflix installation so I went to install Netflix on my work laptop, but there is no Netflix app for laptops anymore! Finally, I got it working through Family Share after an hour of tedious effort. This may be more Netflix&#x27;s fault than Apple, but why would an OS give that power to a 3rd party in the first place? What sense does this make?It reminds me of NextJS where there is some minor niceties at the cost of magical thinking that you may need to move heaven and earth to circumvent in order to accomplish the most basic shit.

Wait a second ... a "framework" for React? Isn't React itself already a framework for JavaScript?

Well ... first of all, React is a "library" for JavaScript. That seems to be important for some people.

Not for me, but still, there is a valid point: React already is a framework / library for JavaScript. So it's already an extra layer on top of JS.

## Getting Started

Create Next App:

You can start editing the page by modifying `pages/index.js`. The page auto-updates as you edit the file.

[API routes](https://nextjs.org/docs/api-routes/introduction) can be accessed on [http://localhost:3000/api/hello](http://localhost:3000/api/hello). This endpoint can be edited in `pages/api/hello.js`.

The `pages/api` directory is mapped to `/api/*`. Files in this directory are treated as [API routes](https://nextjs.org/docs/api-routes/introduction) instead of React pages.

## Why would we then need NextJS?

Because NextJS makes building React apps easier - especially React apps that should have server-side rendering (though it does way more than just take care of that).
