Hey HN, Lich is a worktree aware local dev stack orchestrator. Simply put, it allows you to run multiple copies of your development stack from different worktrees with different code in parallel without going insane. I built Lich because I’ve found myself increasingly using multiple parallel coding agents for development work. I wanted my coding agents to each have independent copies of my development stack to be able to test and validate their own work well. I found that trying to do this totally broke the way I have normally setup tooling for local development. Ports conflict, the UI from one worktree connects to the backend or DB from another one, logs are hard to track down because agents start stacks in the background, any reliability problem sends agents down a rabbithole trying to fix it.I originally built around 5k lines of bash scripts to solve this problem for a single relatively complex application was able to do it, but I realized that for any future thing I might work on I would have to build that whole setup again even though it’s not really that coupled to the specific application I’m working on. I realized I could build a clean, re-usable abstraction to solve this problem robustly and comprehensively for practically any repo through a standard lich.yaml definition and a simple CLI that manages the stack lifecycle, port allocation, log management, and garbage collection. That is what lich is.You might wonder: why can’t I use docker compose to solve this problem? (or insert other existing tools here). The simple answer is you totally can, but it has two issues: 
1. These tools really weren’t built for this use case, they might be able to support it but you’ll end up building a lot of custom tooling to make it possible. Though some tools make it easier than others.
2. If you find a tool that happens to be pretty good at solving this problem, you typically end up needing to adopt its conventions and opinions for your entire stack. Simply put, I don’t want to dockerize all of my services just to be able to run multiple copies of my stack in parallel.Lich is intentionally designed to be un-opinionated. It sits on top of and drives whatever tooling you already have.If you have a simple app (just a nextjs app with a development workflow that uses only a hosted testing db for example), you might find that you don’t need lich. That’s probably right. Lich is most useful when you have a relatively complex repo with multiple different services and you also want to run a copy of the DB locally. If you’re thinking about dynamically allocating ports in your startup scripts or managing state and logs, you probably need lich.I use lich daily to run 3-5 independent stacks in parallel from different worktrees for a complex application with 5+ services and multiple docker containers per stack.I’ve released Lich as open source with the MIT license. There’s a demo video in the GitHub readme showing me using Lich to start a dev stack in the main workspace of the lich t3 starter repo and then spawn 5 parallel subagents through Claude Code that each make an edit to the template homepage and then spawn a separate copy of the stack with it’s own DB in parallel.The easiest way to try out lich is to use that t3 starter repo. Steven is a teacher and he got sick of having to deal with outdated, overly expensive and inadequate tooling to create, conduct and grade exams. Most of them don&#x27;t respect privacy either or are US based which generally disqualifies them from usage in many parts of the EU.So we set out with a mission: Create a tool for teachers and schools that covers exams E2E. The reality is that teachers usually care about some things that we simply could not find combined in a product: They want flexible ways to create exams with different task types, they want auto-grading where possible, they want to collect parent signatures, they want to be privacy conscious and they care that their students don&#x27;t cheat.We got to work and this is our result. We tried to address all of these points and more and after two years of development and a multi month beta in stealth mode with a bunch of teachers from Stevens school we are confident enough to officially launch.For those who are more interested in the technical aspects I thought I would share some of them:
We use Nextjs as our meta framework, Sqlite for data persistence, Drizzle as our ORM and Litestream for backups. On the frontend we make extensive use of the different Tanstack libraries, Tiptap for various rich text modules and a heavily modded shadcn component library for large parts of the UI.I will mention that the Spanish translations we use are AI generated and we are fleshing it out more as we get feedback from some of our testers. So are the cover images for our blog posts. We hope to replace them once we have some more time to flesh out our CI.We are a small start up: Just 2 people and fully self-funded. This is a passion project of ours which we hope will help teachers in their workflows and we hope to turn this into our full time jobs if we can make this thing grow. We built npx consentify-migrate. Run it in a project root, or in a folder of client sites with bulk .&#x2F;(folder-name) and it:Detectes the framework (nextjs, nuxt, astro, angular, vue, wordpress, plain html etc. 
Finds and removes existing cmp, plus hardcoded tracking scripts.
Detects integrations by running our scanner on the deployed domain and re-adds the scripts used through consentify.
Finds your privacy-policy route accross languages (required for cookie-declaration).
Creates the domain via the api and commits everything on a separate git branch.Bulk mode also writes a migration report.

Asking in good faith: how is your experience working with vanilla JS on a team?While I’m not the biggest fan of Nextjs for my own solo projects, I really enjoy using it at work. Leaning into the opinionation it provides&#x2F;encourages keeps my team from bickering too much about how to structure things.It’s really nice to say “this is the idiomatic way of doing it according to the docs” and for everyone to nod their head. Whereas pages in our legacy PHP codebase look completely different depending on who implemented them.

I figure this is the nextjs exception? The website would probably be HTML-first (I.e. SSR, would work non-interactively without JS), just that the JS doesn’t fail silently.

From what I remember, next-auth is kind of dead and Better Auth developers have been maintaining security of next-auth for some time now. (or was it Vercel that did the maintaining?)Better Auth is the go-to solution for many people using Nextjs, so it makes sense that Vercel puts some effort in maintaining it.I have never had issues running Nextjs in regular containers, it is just a good open source solution, I don&#x27;t see why it would be any different with Better Auth.

Part of the industry always seek humans able to code with deep understanding. AI is fast but always lacks depth, works better if you are able to pilot it with your knowledge. If that changes, learning code becomes useless. If you learn code with limited depth (nextjs bros), this is already useless.

Well ... first of all, React is a "library" for JavaScript. That seems to be important for some people.

Not for me, but still, there is a valid point: React already is a framework / library for JavaScript. So it's already an extra layer on top of JS.

The `pages/api` directory is mapped to `/api/*`. Files in this directory are treated as [API routes](https://nextjs.org/docs/api-routes/introduction) instead of React pages.

Because NextJS makes building React apps easier - especially React apps that should have server-side rendering (though it does way more than just take care of that).
