Hey HN! I have been working on Ant for a while now, would love to share around now.What is Ant? It&#x27;s my JavaScript runtime, built from scratch over many hours of work. Much effort has gone into keeping the binary size small, around 9MB at the moment (6.5 MB with -Os). On my M4 Pro, the hono coldstart bench (examples&#x2F;npm&#x2F;hono&#x2F;bench-coldstart.js) lands around 5ms, about 2.4x faster than bun, and 5.8x faster than node.To keep things small, the engine (&quot;Ant Silver&quot;) is hand-written, not a wrapper around V8&#x2F;JSC&#x2F;SpiderMonkey. The JIT is still a work in progress but it uses a fork of MIR as the backend.Ant currently targets the WinterTC Minimum Common API, while also passing 100% the javascript-zoo compat-table tests, and is sitting around 64% on test262.Why did I build Ant? Well, I wanted a runtime small enough to ship with CLI&#x27;s and small Docker containers without having to drag along 50 to 100mb of just runtime. I&#x27;ve been working on something called Afterburner: a fast, embeddable JS&#x2F;TS runtime written in Rust, with a capability sandbox baked right in.Scripts run locked down by default: no network, no filesystem, no environment variables. You explicitly grant whatever access a script actually needs, and every call gets hard caps on CPU, memory, and time.The goal isn&#x27;t to replace your existing stack. It&#x27;s to fit cleanly into it:Embed a JS&#x2F;TS engine in your Rust app with a single crate. Run user scripts, plugins, business rules, or edge logic, each call fully sandboxed.
Wrap the tools you already use. Commands like `burn node app.js`, `burn npm test`, `burn bun`, `burn deno run`, and `burn npx tsx` run your existing toolchain under the sandbox. Take an unmodified Express, Fastify, or Hono app and run it with zero ambient I&#x2F;O and a memory ceiling. No code changes needed.
Use the built-in registry at registry.afterburner.sh. Publish with `burn publish`, install with `burn install` or `burn add` dependencies are pinned by content digest. Every package ships with a capability manifest, so installed code is sandboxed by default. It also interops with npm, so you can still pull in npm libraries as needed.

I&#x27;m working on the Survival Crafting RPG that you would have played on your Apple II back in the &#x27;80s. You can think of it as Valheim&#x27;s gameplay crammed into the tile-based UI of the old Ultima games.
It has a procedurally-generated open world with towns and NPCs to talk to, all the resource gathering, mining, crafting stuff you&#x27;d expect in a modern survival game, and some good old fashioned dungeon crawling to boot.I&#x27;ve been working on it off and on for the last several months.
